It’s
no surprise that Amina Bennett was one of the 2007 Chicago Idol
Finalists! She comes to the stage with an array of musical experiences
that have contributed to her unique sound and spirited delivery. Her
voice has served as an instrument of praise that has extended beyond
the sanctuary to the larger Chicago community. She has performed in
such venues as Cuatro, Close-up 2, Smoke Daddy, Piece, Duffy’s
and the late Cotton Club to name a few. You can also find Amina sharing
her gift at private fundraisers and with students and staff in the
academic community .
Amina began her
musical journey at the young age of five singing Gospel music in the
choir and performing soul- stirring duets with her older sister. She
grew up in a household where Motown’s greatest hits were musical
standards and learned to perfect the crooning and emotional relief that
is so evident in the music of that era. Her first introductions to
music set the foundation for her love of harmony, syncopation and
rhythmic pulses that are characteristic of gospel music. Armed with her
Baptist church music experiences, Amina went on to receive private
voice lessons in classical music for eight years at Western Reserve
Academy, a boarding school in Hudson, Ohio and Carleton College, in
Northfield Minnesota. It was Amina’s experience in boarding school
learning the trials of independence, perseverance and humility that
revealed her true love for music as an art expression. While in
academia she remained intrinsically involved in the music scene where
her experiences ranged from joining an a cappella group to forming a
Gospel Choir. In 2003, Amina’s musical journey led her to the steps of
the Jazz scene where she actively fuses her Gospel, Motown, Classical
and Jazz experiences into a sound that is all her own.
Since 2004 Amina has been bringing sweet soul to the windy city through
public and private appearances. Her stage presence is such that she
exudes personality and professionalism, creating a welcoming and “down
to earth” atmosphere. She remarks of her performance, “I am just using
the gift that God has bestowed upon me. I am so thankful and honored
that he has chosen me to be the vessel for such a stirring gift.” It is
this same humility and desire to inspire that permeates through Amina’s
music to make music lovers feel each note that she bends and live the
stories that she reveals in each song. Amina’s voice resonates with
passion and purpose. One music lover commented that Amina’s voice is “a
breath of fresh air; so soft--yet strong. She can captivate an audience
with just one note, and each song is filled with emotion.”
